Superfly
Paulinho Guitarra celebrates his 70th

Curtis Mayfield, Isaak Hayes, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Quincy Jones, Roy Ayers, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, John Coltrane, King Curtis. What do these artists have in common?

They were all sources of inspiration for Paulinho Guitarra, a boy who started playing at the age of 12 and, at the age of 16, became part of the band Vitória Regia, creating hits with Tim Maia.

In addition to being a guitarist, composer and music producer, Paulinho helped write the history of Brazilian music alongside artists with whom he composed, recorded and shared the stage: Marcos Valle, Ed Motta, João Donato, Bebel Gilberto, Sidney Magal, Cassiano, Hyldon, Marina Lima, Cláudio Zoli, Cazuza, Gerson King Combo, Sandra de Sá, Paula Lima, Carlos Dafé, Banda Black Rio, Serginho Trombone, Leo Gandelman, Celso Blues Boy and others.

With Tim Maia, he lived one of the most remarkable stages of his career, when he recorded several albums, such as the acclaimed albums from the Tim Maia Racional series.

He is co-author of one of the greatest hits of this phase, O Caminho do Bem, included in the soundtrack of the award-winning film City of God (2002), and in the series The Hunter (2020).

If Paulinho created the “Brazilian funk guitar”, it was thanks to the influence of all these artists (foreign and Brazilian) added to his talent, irreverence and genius.

Putting on a show in honor of these artists is a natural and, at the same time, challenging path for Paulinho Guitarra. This is a completely new show, with a band and a repertoire created especially for this great spectacle.

A show that brings the best of groove and black American and Brazilian music and shows all the power of Paulinho Guitarra’s original music.

A show whose proposal is to celebrate the 70th.

The 70s saw the black population fight for their civil rights and the right to exist with their colorful clothes, Black Power hair and a great thirst for freedom. A freedom that was experienced through music.

The 70s of American Blaxploitation cinema, a cinema starring black artists, whose soundtracks revolutionized American music and the rest of the world.

The 70s of the Black Rio movement, a translation of what was happening abroad, but with a Brazilian accent and rhythm.

The 70s of Paulinho Guitarra who transformed all these references into his own music, completely original, with the swing of soul music spread over a jazzy texture, with strong hints of blues, rock and MPB.

All this with the hope and audacity of the 12 when it all began!

Paulinho Guitar and Gerson King Combo, Rio de Janeiro, 1970.

And what to expect from the Superfly show?

A great celebration of music, a repertoire composed of reinterpretations of soundtracks from famous Blaxploitation films (such as Superfly, Shaft, Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, Rififi no Harlem, among others), memorable songs from Black Rio dances, original songs and great hits by Paulinho Guitarra and his guests.

The show has a backing band made up of musicians who share the same influences as Paulinho and who are recognized for their excellence in instrumental music. Superfly is a memorable show that pays homage to the musical references that revolutionized a generation!
